Table Talk Pies isn’t just a Worcester favorite: The local pie company just took home two prizes in a national competition.

Table Talk was one of 22 bakeries that entered 470 pies in the Commercial Division of the 2017 American Pie Council National Pie Championships.

The American Pie Council calls itself “the leading authority on the nation’s most popular All-American treat.”

Table Talk was recognized in the Commercial Division for two pies: The 8-inch salted caramel apple and the 4-inch pecan.

The 23rd National Pie Championships took place on May 5 and 6 in Orlando.

There were 26 flavor categories in the Commercial Division, including apple, chocolate cream, citrus, peanut butter, berry, best new product and a chicken pot pie in the savory category, according to the American Pie Council.

“Pie is a simple, delicious piece of our nation’s heritage,” said Linda Hoskins, the executive director of the American Pie Council.

Table Talk produces 3.6 million pies a week and employs more than 300 people between its Canal District production plant in Worcester and a Shrewsbury location. Earlier this year, it opened its first retail store in more than 20 years.

Company President and third-generation owner Harry Kukkinis said the company is constantly testing new potential flavors with its own internal research and development.

During a recent visit to the company, MassLive got a sneak peek at two possibilities in the works: A chocolate chip cookie pie — labeled “The Tollhouse Formula” and a chocolate pecan pie.

Don’t expect to see either on the grocery store shelf too soon. Table Talk is still in the early stages of testing these flavors, which Kukkinis said were suggested by customers.
